Green Claims Directive: regulating environmental claims
The Green Claims Directive aims to regulate environmental claims (for example carbon neutral, eco-friendly) so they are justified, verified and not misleading.
What it requires
Environmental claims will have to rely on solid scientific evidence, be verified by a third party and not mislead. Vague or unsubstantiated claims will be sanctioned. It is a direct response to greenwashing.
How to comply
Measure rigorously (LCA, product footprint to ISO 14067), have it verified and communicate transparently. UltraCarbon lets you calculate and certify a publicly verifiable footprint, the basis of a defensible claim.
Frequently asked questions
Will carbon neutral still be allowed?
Only if it is rigorously substantiated and verified. Neutrality claims based solely on offsetting are particularly regulated.
Is third-party verification required?
Yes, the directive provides for independent verification of claims before communication.
