SBTi: science-based climate targets
The SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) helps companies set emission-reduction targets consistent with the Paris Agreement, i.e. limiting warming to 1.5 °C.
The principle of a 1.5 °C target
A 1.5 °C-aligned pathway implies an annual reduction of about 4.2% in absolute emissions. The SBTi provides methods to set and have these targets validated.
Covering Scope 3
The SBTi requires Scope 3 to be included when it exceeds 40% of total emissions, which is common. Engaging suppliers then becomes central.
Measure then steer
You only reduce what you measure. UltraCarbon calculates the footprint, displays the 1.5 °C pathway (about -4.2%/year) and enables multi-year tracking to check progress.
Frequently asked questions
Is the SBTi mandatory?
No, it is voluntary, but it has become a credibility standard expected by customers, investors and the CSRD.
How does it differ from carbon neutrality?
The SBTi focuses first on reducing emissions; neutrality adds the offsetting of residual emissions. Reduction remains the priority.
