Business energy: electricity, gas and carbon footprint

Energy consumed on site falls under Scope 1 (combustion) and Scope 2 (purchased electricity, heat). It is often a quick item to measure from invoices.

Scope 1 and Scope 2

Gas, fuel oil or wood burned on site = Scope 1. Electricity and heat or cooling purchased from a network = Scope 2. The factor depends on the country and the contract (grid mix, green electricity).

Frequently asked questions

Green electricity = zero carbon?

No, but the factor is much lower than the grid mix. A renewable contract clearly reduces Scope 2.

Is gas Scope 1 or 2?

Gas burned on your premises is Scope 1 (direct emission). Purchased electricity is Scope 2.
